A night to remember....

So let me begin by saying....Im not crazy. But what happened last night TOTALLY WAS!

Gabe is out of town this weekend rekindling old bromances with college buddies in San Diego. I have been doing damage control with my kids since Friday morning when he flew out. It has been nuts and I totally have a newfound respect for single mothers and those amazing wives who have husbands that travel a lot. What a nightmare. My house wont stay cleaned, and I haven't been able to fix my hair once! Brigitte runs wild yelling "oh no! Daddys gone! whered he go?" Needless to say .... 830 tonight cant come fast enough for me!

Anyway. Back to last night. The point of that whole paragraph was simply that I AM HOME ALONE!

So I finally got my kids put to bed around 10. The crazy storm was blowing junk all through the neighborhood and the howling wind kept Brigitte up late. I was so exhausted from the day that I collapsed in front of the computer to finish up a few emails and unwind. Out of the corner of my eye I kept thinking someone was walking back and forth over the front step. We have etched glass panels on either side of the front door - and I swear someone was out there! I finally got up the nerve to investigate - and realized that our American Flag was blowing violently to and fro. I felt relieved and sat back down at the computer. At around 10:30 I threw the clothes from the washer into the dryer and closed all the curtains and locked every single door. By 11 I could barely keep my eyes open and decided to go read a book in bed. I went upstairs and checked on my sleeping children - both of them were tucked in their beds.

I got through 3 chapters of my book before I was completely asleep. And then (this is where it gets interesting) I was jolted out of bed by a HUGE BANG from downstairs. I looked at the clock and it was 12:30. Spencer started crying (I assume he was jolted awake too) so i ran into his room to quiet him down. I rocked him for a minute while my adrenaline calmed down and I tried to decide what the loud sound might have been. I honestly couldnt figure it out. Spencer fell back asleep and I  laid him in the crib.

As I turned to make my way back to my room I realized something terrifying: The downstairs lights were on. Yes. Brightly glowing. I stood there petrified for a second and then went into my room and got back into bed. I was way too scared to walk downstairs to investigate.

I laid there trying and trying to convince myself that I had possibly left the lights on. Nope. No way. I had checked on the kids before I went to bed and it was pitch black in the hallway right above the landing. I know the lights were off. So I laid there with this sense of pure fear! What was that sound that woke us up? And why were the lights on. I texted Gabe - R U awake? No answer. I laid there for a few minutes.

And thats when I heard it.

A kitchen cupboard slammed shut. And then more. again and again. Footsteps shuffling around on the hard wood floor. More cupboards being opened and shut. Not in a loud frantic manner....just as if someone was looking for a spoon or a cup, but they couldn't find it. And that is when I panicked. Someone was 100% without a doubt downstairs in my house. And I was home alone. With two babies. Upstairs - with no way out.

Whoever it was - most definitely knew I was upstairs. Spencer had full on cried and I had sat there in the rocker talking to him for 10 minutes. My heart was racing. I texted my little brother Curtis - R U Awake? Thankfully he was. And I told him to high tale it over to my house because something weird was going on downstairs. About 10 minutes later he showed up.

When I heard Curtis open the garage door (with our code) I slowly started walking down the stairs. Yes, the living room light was on - bright as day. And Yes, the Kitchen light was also on, glowing in all its glory. But nothing else seemed out of the ordinary. I unlocked the door from the garage and let Curt in. When we both turned around we noticed it- the door to the laundry room was wide open and the clothes from the dryer were spilling out onto the floor. The light from the door being ajar was the only light on in the room and it looked absolutely creepy. Curtis said to me: I hope thats not a load of undies, because if some weirdo broke in to trifle through them that would be pretty messed up! The clothes were half still in the dryer and a few of them were in a pile on the floor. Exactly like someone opened it up to get just one article out and then didnt bother to clean up or close the door. Again, I knew that the laundry room door had been shut and that the dryer also had been closed because I started it about 30 minutes before I went to bed!

We walked through the downstairs and I told him about the cupboards and sounds of someone looking for something in the kitchen. There was only one tiny drawer open - the one with baggies and tin foil in it. Curt kicked it shut but it slid back open. We just shrugged and went upstairs. I made him sleep over and nothing else happened during the night.

In the morning I thanked Curtis for rescuing me in the night from the invisible intruder and apologized for summoning him over so late. I opened the front door to let him out - and there they were. Smashed eggs all over the glass panel next to the door. Someone had egged the house...

So I am left to wonder - could an intruder possibly have been scoping out the house earlier in the night when I thought I saw someone on the steps but blamed it on the flag? Could they have egged the window at midnight waking me and spencer up? Could they have somehow gotten into the house and rattled around in the kitchen, turned on a few lights and tried to scare me? Could they have been looking in the dryer for something? And then could they have vanished into thin air - locking all the doors behind them?

Not Likely.

I could rationalize away the noise with the egging. If someone threw those eggs from a car - it would totally account for the loud bang that woke me up. But the rest...the lights, the cupboards, the walking, and the dryer??? No idea. My best guess is of course that the good ol' hauntings are back with a vengeance.

It was almost like the ghost...was trying to lure me downstairs.

Needless to say Gabe will not be traveling without me in the future.
Either that or Im buying one of these:

K I was scared just reading this! I'm glad everything was okay! I never want to be left home alone all night!!! You and those ghosts! They need to leave you alone! :)

Sorry I wasn't there. I definitely would have called 911! I hear you are supposed to yell at the ghost and tell it leave your house! I have no first hand experience from this as all our ghosts left the house when you did.... I think you should set up a nanny cam in the kitchen... I'll look for one on ebay.

Ok that totally freaked me out! My friend got robbed in the night...in her garage while they were home. Not the same, but I'm thinkin you are seriously haunted, or seriously need to change your locks and get that nanny cam suggested earlier..then program Jared into your phone for emergencies. Holy crap, I'd never want to be home alone again!

Totally would have called 911, sat in front of my kids doors with our gun! (dog would have been better) and waiting until the police showed up. I get soooo jumpy when Justin is gone. Ah! Glad you are ok!

Oh Christy I would have FREAKED out! That is so scary, my adrenaline is pumping just reading this. Okay aside from the ghost or the intruder or whatever else, who the fudge egged your house. That just ticks me off. I hate vandalism so much. That is crazy and as I learned watching The Ghost Whisperer "houses aren't hautned, people are." In your case I swear this is true! Crazy, crazy, crazy. Come stay the night at our house next time. Jeez.

Christy- I love love love reading comments from you! You are always so uplifting and know just how to make me feel better! I do remember your miscarriage and coming to your moms house with you and until now I had forgot about the footprint pin. I am so glad you still have it...maybe I need to get myself one. I agree that even though it was short...I gained alot from our friendship back then and I am so glad it can continue via the web now! Love you and thanks! I am trying to be strong but I don't think I am doing a very good job at it right now!

P.S. this isn't your first egging incident. Remember Rexburg like a million years ago when the Cougar was the target? I felt so sad for you and whisked it away to get washed.
